Apple to Manufacture and Source All Its Mobile Phones in India in the Coming Years, Says Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia

Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted Apple’s decision to source the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. from India as a key example.

Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated on Tuesday that investing in India is economically beneficial for every original equipment manufacturer, citing the example of U.S. tech giant Apple’s decision to source the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. from India.

Speaking at the Bharat Telecom event, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized that investing in India today is not merely an act of goodwill, but a decision that makes strong economic sense for every original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

The minister highlighted that the telecom equipment market, boosted by the government’s production-linked incentive scheme, has seen significant growth. “An investment of Rs 4,000 crore (half a billion dollars) has led to sales worth Rs 80,000 crore, exports of Rs 16,000 crore, and the creation of 25,000 jobs. As a result, the telecom equipment market in India has expanded considerably,” he noted.

Scindia further stated that India has not only caught up with the global advancements in technologies like 4G and 5G, but is now taking the lead, driven by sweeping reforms and technological innovations that are shaping the country’s future.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently announced that the company will expand its manufacturing operations in India, with plans to source and produce a significant portion of its mobile phones within the country in the coming years.

Speaking at ‘Bharat Telecom 2025,’ an event attended by more than 500 industry experts and government officials, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the significant growth in India’s telecom sector and the increasing role of local manufacturing in driving the country’s technological advancements.

The minister also said that in just 22 months, India has managed to achieve remarkable growth in the telecom sector, with substantial increases in both production and exports, driven by strategic reforms and the government’s focused efforts to boost domestic manufacturing.

He further pointed out that the ‘digital highway’ that has been developed over the past few years is now a crucial enabler of India’s growth, supporting advancements in connectivity, innovation, and economic development across various sectors.
